Tedial asset and process management technology expands to support all popular HD formats.

With more and more television companies preparing for high definition production and broadcasting, the need to move to simply scalable tapeless infrastructures is now pressing. Broadcasters and media companies need to be able to support multiple resolutions, including HD, and multiple formats seamlessly. Tedial’s unique solutions for the seamless integration of asset and process management right across an organisation now include support for all popular HD video formats.

Tedial has developed its asset and process management systems using three cluster architectures: the database cluster, the processing cluster and the storage cluster. The move to HD has impacts for both the processing cluster and the storage cluster, and Tedial has proven technology throughout the whole application. It also has integrated technology to ensure that the data network design is adequate for the greatly increased bandwidths.

The Tedial MPM media process manager automates the flows of both media and metadata, managing the processing cluster where the material is analysed, processed and transformed, for example by transcoding or trans-wrapping. Most installations will use multiple video formats (for acquisition, editing, medium and long term storage) so seamless movement between formats, wrappers and metadata is a major boost for operational efficiency.

To guarantee scalability for HD, Tedial has increased the functionality of MPM and its associated Indexer system for full compatibility with all popular HD formats including XD-CAM HD, DHxHD and DVCPro 100. It automatically supports operations including standards verification, versioning, proxy copy generation and transcoding and transwrapping. Thanks to Tedial’s in-house algorithms, these processes are remarkably quick: the Windows Media browse proxy can be generated from a DNxHD original faster than real time.

Storage management in the Tedial infrastructure is the AST module. This is designed to be fully scalable, seamlessly integrating SATA disk arrays and LTO library storage, which in many installations can eliminate the need for centralised storage on a SAN. Again, Tedial’s in-house developments mean that AST is unique in supporting partial recovery of media in high definition long GOP formats such as XDCam HD.

The efficiency of the Tedial solution for managing HD content is already proven in major installations such as Mediapro Gol Channel (which uses DNxHD and MXF) and Telson/Disney (XDCam HD and MXF). Televisa is in the process of implementing a Tedial solution which will use DVCPro 100 and Quicktime.
