Canal Sur
Tedial provides direct access to archives for Canal Sur.
As part of its migration to an integrated digital news operation, Canal Sur has implemented a powerful new archive system from Tedial. The advanced technology in the Tedial Tarsys asset manager gives journalists direct access to all content, including video and audio archives as well as text and data.
Canal Sur, part of Radio Television de Andalucia in Spain, has eight local news offices, and it was a requirement of the digitisation project that journalists everywhere should be able to access all current material and, as it is ingested, the whole of the archive. To minimise the requirement for skilled operators to build the archive, Canal Sur turned to Tedial which is known for its market-leading functionality in automatic indexing.
As part of the project existing simple databases were converted by Tarsys, and now Canal Sur is using automatic tools to associate the media with the database records to create a single, multimedia resource. Tedial tools include storyboard indexing and pattern recognition. In the Canal Sur implementation, because file conversion, browse resolution creation and metadata collection is automated, library managers can devote their time to creating the historical archive and ensuring its structure is perfectly tuned to the needs of their journalists.
Using the simple graphical user interface at any connected desktop, journalists can search the integrated database to research their stories. Video in the archive can be watched on the desktop, and selected content can be transferred direct to editing applications. Content stored at other offices can be searched in exactly the same way, and once clips are chosen the full resolution video is transferred over IP circuits.
The archive is a critical part of any news operation,” said José Enrique Zamorano, technical director of Canal Sur. “One of the greatest benefits of the digitisation project is to be able to give our journalists direct access to the archive. Tedial understood our requirements and built the system we need.
Everyone involved is highly satisfied with the result,” he continued. “Direct access to the shared archive, coupled with excellent metadata and desktop browsing speeds up everyone’s work, and it allows journalists to make better stories because they can use the best footage.”
We have very much enjoyed working with Canal Sur,” said Emilio Lopez Zapata, CTO of Tedial. “Journalists and library managers in a regional station like Canal Sur are under continual pressure to work quickly. The functionality in Tarsys enable them to store and find exactly the right material quickly. Journalists can move from writing a script to finding content without leaving their desks.”
