CMIS - Tarsys 4.0
Tedial implements emerging open standards for service oriented architectures. Tarsys version 4.0 introduces CMIS standard to create unified archives.
Reflecting the growing interest in service oriented architectures (SOA) for broadcast and production systems, leading asset management specialist Tedial has pioneered the introduction of the Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) standard. This will allow companies to develop single heterogenous archive structures which incorporate documents as well as audiovisual content in multiple databases to be researched as a single system.
Tarsys 4.0, the latest version of Tedial’s media asset management platform, incorporates CMIS as a Java implementation, allowing its integration with document management tools from other vendors without the need for significant bespoke development. The CMIS standard, developed by the Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (Oasis) unlocks content access across multiple systems through the use of web services to decouple the research tools from the individual databases.
Professor Emilio López Zapata, founder of Tedial, explained “Audiovisual content rarely stands alone in the archive. In most cases there are multiple media types – documents like scripts and promotional material, still pictures, and data files like subtitles as well as the content metadata. Bringing all of this material into a single resource, even though they may reside on different systems from different vendors, is vital if major archives are to reveal their full value. The system we are currently developing for Spanish national broadcaster RTVE is an excellent example of this.”
Tarsys 4.0 includes a new module, the Tarsys Document Engine, which manages structured and non-structured information stored in different repositories, which may be distributed. Designed with a grid architecture and tightly integrated to Tedial AST, the hierarchical storage manager, it provides full access and version control, thesaurus management to aid searching, and an audit trail.
It is linked to the new Tarsys Search Engine which includes a specialised version of SQL, know as Tarsys Query Language (TQL) to provide practical support for researchers across numerous multimedia databases. Functionality includes powerful search tools including near matches and phonetics as well as Boolean operators. It includes full text indexing, multi-language search, scoring algorithms, and the indexing of non-structured information in documents and web pages using all common commercial formats.
Tarsys 4.0 also includes all the necessary functionality to structure reports and manage the synchronisation of systems across geographically diverse locations. The grid architecture enables load balancing across the network to maintain optimum performance at all times.
“CMIS interoperability improves access to content, reduces development costs, protects user investments and represents a new era for enterprise content management, based on open standards,” explained Dr Zapata. “The excellent technological capabilities of Tedial’s R & D department, in association with Málaga University, has allowed us to develop Tarsys 4.0 very quickly indeed, to meet the newest and highest standards of content management systems integration.”
