When a segment of a media file is needed, the proxy file aids in determining the input and output timecodes of the segment, which are used to locate the original HR file. This segment can then be used to create a new file, either by direct baselining or by converting it to another standard format. By reading only the necessary data from the source file, storage costs are reduced, speeding up hierarchical storage management.
