Julián Fernández-Campón, CTO of Tedial, looks back for TM BROADCAST on nearly two decades of collaboration with RTVE, marked by some of the largest content preservation and management projects carried out in Spanish broadcasting

Over its seven decades of history, RTVE has built one of the largest audiovisual heritages in Spain. News bulletins, entertainment programmes, sporting events, documentaries and cultural productions make up a unique archive that reflects not only the evolution of the corporation but also a good part of Spain’s recent history.

Managing, preserving and adding value to this volume of content has been one of the major technological challenges RTVE has faced in recent decades. Throughout this process, Tedial has played a significant role through projects focused on document management, the digitisation of historical archives and the integration of the various systems involved in the corporation’s media workflows.

“Our collaboration with RTVE has been very positive from the very beginning,” explains Julián Fernández-Campón, CTO of Tedial. “We started the first project back in 2008, with the Document Management system, and we have always worked as a single team to make sure business objectives are met while following best practices.”

Fernández-Campón also highlights the close collaboration maintained with RTVE’s teams throughout these years. “Depending on the needs at each stage, we have worked side by side with the teams involved at RTVE’s own facilities, as well as remotely.”

From document management to the historical archive

If there is one project that is particularly representative of this shared journey, Tedial points to the digitisation of RTVE’s historical archive. As Fernández-Campón explains, the project demanded a major deployment effort to guarantee both compliance with the established requirements and the agreed timelines.

“For RTVE, it was an essential milestone in safeguarding the corporation’s audiovisual heritage, and for Tedial it marked the culmination of a highly ambitious project and a key global reference point for digitisation and content preservation projects.”

For Tedial, the initiative was also a demonstration of its ability to take on projects of great technical and operational complexity.

Beyond preservation

Tedial’s contribution has not been limited to the digitisation of historical content. The company also highlights its role in the evolution of media workflows and in the integration of systems across RTVE.

“Tedial has played a key role in RTVE’s modernisation, having on one hand governed all the processes involved in digitising the historical tape archive, while also providing a platform that manages all radio content and the historical video archive,” says Fernández-Campón. “It also provides an orchestration and integration platform for the corporation’s different systems, such as ingest, playout and newsroom operations, through automated gateways.”

A benchmark for the industry

The scale of the project carried out with RTVE has gone beyond the corporation itself. According to Tedial, the combination of content volume, operational complexity, technological integration and distributed architecture turned this initiative into a benchmark for other broadcasters. “Many clients around the world have seen it as a model to follow.”

Technology, public service and collaboration

As a Spanish company specialising in solutions for audiovisual content management, Tedial believes that working with RTVE carries a special responsibility. “Working with RTVE represents, for Tedial, the goal that every Spanish company should aspire to. Not only for the prestige it brings, but for contributing, as far as possible, to the delivery of projects that represent a common good for Spanish society as a whole.”

Fernández-Campón is also keen to highlight the corporation’s human team and its capacity to take on highly complex projects. “RTVE has always stood out for having a highly capable and professional team, which has made it possible to bring this type of project to a successful conclusion, setting a trend both nationally and globally.”

This assessment also extends to the experience built up over years of working together. “Our main challenge is working with a large corporation, which is highly segmented and where decisions have to be made by many different stakeholders. Our main takeaway, on the other hand, is that the staff are highly qualified at every level.”

The next stage

In closing, Tedial believes that RTVE’s technological evolution remains an open, constantly evolving process. “After almost 20 years of collaboration with RTVE on a project as crucial as archive preservation and the integration of the entire pipeline of new content, we have watched with great enthusiasm as an idea we set out to build has evolved over the years according to the needs of each moment.”
