Any company that has struggled with editors storing versions on their desktop systems can relate to the challenges of managing multiple storage sites. As the world of media production evolves, our tools need to grow and change with it, especially as production workflows span geographically disparate enterprise locations. Today it’s common for a project to start in one city, pass work to another and complete the project on a completely different continent. This evolution in the way we accomplish our work has changed the way we deal with storage management and the old paradigm of vertical hierarchical storage management (HSM) is being transformed.

By considering HSM in a horizontal as well as vertical dimension, today’s production tools can create a “pool” of tiered storage nodes, each node with traditional vertical storage management for local spinning drives, LTO archives and attached cloud capacity. In this way, a number of geographically separated sites can be interconnected and linked to workflows, so that media duplication and movement is efficiently controlled. All the complexities of where versions should be to serve a user in a particular task, what portions of media files are partially restored to high resolution for editing work, or where components of a finished product are kept at any single time is masked from the users, who are only using software tools to get their jobs accomplished. Storage in our modern media processes must be virtualized.

Tedial calls this logical virtualized HSM, Augmented STorage (AST). Going beyond object storage systems already available, content objects managed by AST include a minimum of metadata, which makes AST controlled media files independent of their MAM solution, making each object “smart” in an innovative way.
