At the end of every year, we put together a post discussing industry trends over the past 12 months and the professional highlights that we’ve enjoyed. Then at the beginning of the New Year, we publish a post discussing our thoughts and predictions for the year ahead. On the 14th of January 2020, we posted our post titled – Flying houses and robot butlers – Bring on 2020. Only two-weeks later WHO declared a global health emergency. None of us could have imagined how 2020 would pan out.

Even though it’s been an incredibly difficult year for industries across all sectors, and as we write this in early December there is still a long way to go before COVID-19 is brought under control, having said that there is a distinct air of optimism for 2021. With the imminent roll-out of vaccines across the world, hopefully, we can slowly begin to emerge from this strangest of years to a new transformed  media industry that’s adopted in just weeks or months,  new technologies that were already slowly underway to improve workflows and working practices. Remote production has given a lifeline to the entire broadcast and media community providing the capability to produce programmes and manage media remotely, ensuring the safety of colleagues, customers and partners during these unprecedented times.

The key driver for remote working is the use of cloud services, which can be accessed from anywhere, without sacrificing Quality-of-Service. Because of the continuing increase in UHD content and thereby high-bandwidth demands, it’s essential that media companies deploy a hybrid cloud infrastructure that follows the basic principle of ‘bringing applications to media’, and not ‘media to applications’.

By using computing storage and services architecture that combine the privacy and security of a private cloud with the scalability of a public cloud, users benefit from orchestration among various platforms and multiple sites. They can store sensitive data and high-value, high-resolution content on-premises inside a secure IT environment that’s not accessible outside their facility, fully under the control of their IT team. In addition, some operations need continuous access to media, which needs to be executed on-premises. Less critical operations including burst or peak demands in business operations can be quickly deployed and run in the cloud for enhanced agility. This means that media companies pay only for the period of time required by the additional business operations. High cost services such as storage for archiving can benefit from the ability to tailor the operations to the business cost criteria. Our Hybrid Cloud architecture does all this and more and in September we were delighted to announce that we won a TVB Europe Best of Show Award.

This award coincided with IBC Showcase where we announced a new version of our web-based HTML5 Capture Manager, which provides an agnostic central interface for controlling and monitoring devices as well as advanced, ingest features. We also unveiled several new features and functionalities incorporated into SMARTLIVE for increased fan engagement. Broadcasters can now deliver improved and more vivid graphics thanks to a new integration between SMARTLIVE and’s cloud-based technology for live graphic overlays. SMARTLIVE is also now connected to a video AI engine to detect replays into the video live stream or file to provide even more advanced storytelling, making highlights more dynamic.

As part of our award-winning Evolution MAM system, in August we announced that we’ve created a metadata service engine. Agnostic to any data feed it allows operators to ingest different metadata sources and to aggregate and analyse these sources to provide a real editorial value to the production team. This includes video AI – face recognition, sentiment analysis, object detection etc.; audio AI –  speech-to-text in partnership with Speechmatics’ automatic speech recognition technology; external data sources from service providers such as StatsPerform; internal data sources from our own logging tools; and external data sources from service providers such as StatsPerform, MLB Gumbo feed or EVS IPDirector logging data.

Although we’ve really missed meeting our friends and colleagues in person this year, we were delighted to take part in the NAB Show Express, IBC Showcase and IABM  Future Trend Channel. It will be interesting to see how these virtual events develop in conjunction with the traditional trade shows that we all know and love.

There are things to be learned from living through a pandemic and for most it has been an eye opener.  It has accelerated fundamental changes that were already slowly underway in the industry that occurred in just months. And despite the difficulties that the industry has endured we’ve still got plenty to be grateful for and we have a very exciting 2021 planned. But for now we’d like to round off the year by wishing you all a very safe and happy Christmas. We very much look forward to seeing you all, hopefully in person, next year.
